The new option can move an eligible B-1/B-2 interview up to within 10 business days, but it does not make the interview easier or change the legal standard.

On August 18, 2026, the U.S. Department of State expanded its Nonimmigrant Visa Expedited Appointment Pilot Program, adding five participating posts: Mission Canada, Embassy Bogota, Embassy Guatemala City, Embassy San Jose, and Embassy Tegucigalpa. They join Mission Mexico, which launched the pilot on July 21, 2026.

For eligible B-1/B-2 applicants, the program offers an interview within the next 10 business days, subject to availability, for an additional $750 fee. That can be valuable for travelers facing long standard wait times. But the fee only buys a faster appointment. It does not improve the odds of approval, shorten visa adjudication, or change the legal standard the applicant must meet.

That is why preparation becomes more urgent under this pilot. A traveler who expected months to prepare may now have only days before sitting across from a consular officer.

Quick Takeaways

The pilot is available at Mission Mexico and now at Mission Canada, Embassy Bogota, Embassy Guatemala City, Embassy San Jose, and Embassy Tegucigalpa.

The expedited appointment fee is $750 per applicant, separate from the standard $185 MRV application fee.

Paid Expedite appointments are within the next 10 business days, subject to limited daily availability.

Once booked, a Paid Expedite appointment cannot be rescheduled. Missed or canceled appointments forfeit the fee.

Interview waiver renewals do not qualify. Applicants must have a scheduled in-person interview appointment.

Not sure what to expect at the interview itself? Try a free ImmiPrep.ai mock interview before your date arrives.

How the Paid Expedite Option Works

Applicants must complete the usual B-1/B-2 scheduling steps first: pay the $185 MRV application fee and schedule a regular interview appointment. If they are applying at a participating post, meet the eligibility criteria, and an expedited slot is available, the scheduling account may display a Paid Expedite option after they request an expedited appointment.

After selecting an available expedited date and time, the applicant has 10 minutes to pay the $750 fee and secure the appointment. Each post releases only a limited number of expedited slots per day. For group appointments, each applicant must pay the fee if the group wants to move together, although the system may allow only some group members to separate and expedite.

What the Fee Does Not Change

The Paid Expedite option moves up the interview date only. It does not guarantee visa issuance, does not guarantee expedited processing after the interview, and does not reduce screening or vetting.

Every B-1/B-2 applicant still has to demonstrate eligibility under U.S. law, including showing a credible temporary purpose for travel, and overcoming the presumption of immigrant intent under Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Want to walk through those questions before you’re in front of an officer? Practice a realistic mock interview with ImmiPrep.ai.

What This Means for Applicants in the Expanded Locations

The expansion is especially meaningful for applicants in ImmiPrep.ai’s core markets. Applicants scheduling through Mission Canada now have access to the same paid 10-business-day path that has been available in Mexico since July 21. Applicants applying through Bogota, Guatemala City, San Jose, and Tegucigalpa can also request a faster date rather than waiting only on the standard queue.

The option is still capacity-limited. It appears only when the post participates, slots are available, and the applicant meets the program criteria. Applicants should check current wait times and the local scheduling system before deciding whether the $750 fee is worth paying.

Standard Wait vs. Paid Expedite

The value of Paid Expedite depends heavily on the post. In Toronto, the State Department’s current Global Visa Wait Times list the next available standard B-1/B-2 appointment at roughly 24 months. At Guatemala City and Tegucigalpa, the next available standard appointment is under half a month, so the expedite fee may be less about escaping a long backlog and more about securing a specific urgent date.

Post

Standard next available B-1/B-2 appointment

Paid Expedite timeline

Mission Canada, Toronto

24 months

Within 10 business days

Mission Canada, Vancouver

16 months

Within 10 business days

Mission Canada, Ottawa

13.5 months

Within 10 business days

Embassy Bogota

9 months

Within 10 business days

Embassy San Jose

8.5 months

Within 10 business days

Mission Mexico, Mexico City

4 months

Within 10 business days

Embassy Guatemala City

Under 0.5 month

Within 10 business days

Embassy Tegucigalpa

Under 0.5 month

Within 10 business days

Source: U.S. Department of State, Global Visa Wait Times, last updated August 17, 2026. Wait times change and do not guarantee appointment availability.

The interview, not the appointment date, determines the outcome. Applicants who pay for a faster date should use the shortened window to practice immediately, not to prepare less thoroughly.

Attorney Insight

The core point is simple: paying the $750 fee buys time on the calendar. It does not buy a stronger case or a more forgiving interview.

In some ways, expedited applicants face a harder preparation challenge because the timeline is compressed. They should be ready to explain the purpose of travel, the planned itinerary, how the trip will be funded, and why they will return home after a temporary stay. If those answers are vague, inconsistent, or over-rehearsed in the wrong way, the faster appointment will not help.

B-1/B-2 Adjusted Refusal Rates in ImmiPrep.ai’s Core Markets

Refusal rates vary by nationality and do not predict the outcome of any individual interview. The table below shows the State Department’s FY2025 adjusted refusal rates for B-visas by nationality. For nationalities whose citizens may often travel without visitor visas, the rate reflects only visa applications submitted, not all travel to the United States.

Country

FY2025 adjusted B-visa refusal rate

Pilot status

Canada

53.10%

Paid Expedite live since 8/18/26

Colombia

32.84%

Paid Expedite live since 8/18/26 (Bogota)

Guatemala

39.21%

Paid Expedite live since 8/18/26

Costa Rica

16.14%

Paid Expedite live since 8/18/26

Honduras

46.52%

Paid Expedite live since 8/18/26

Mexico

21.36%

Paid Expedite live since 7/21/26

India

22.04%

Not yet a pilot location

Source: U.S. Department of State, Adjusted Refusal Rates by Nationality, B-Visas, Fiscal Year 2025.

How ImmiPrep.ai Can Help

Whether an applicant books a standard appointment or pays to move the interview date forward, preparation still matters. ImmiPrep.ai gives B-1/B-2 applicants realistic mock interview practice in English, Spanish, or Portuguese before they sit down with a consular officer.

ImmiPrep.ai is a multilingual, AI-powered mock-interview platform developed amongst others, by a U.S. immigration attorney and a former U.S. immigration officer. It helps B-1/B-2 visa applicants practice common consular-interview questions and receive detailed, personalized feedback in English, Spanish and Portuguese, with other languages soon to come. Start a free mock interview at ImmiPrep.ai to see how it works.

Applicants from countries covered by this pilot program should understand that interview preparation cannot guarantee a particular visa outcome.

A realistic mock interview can nevertheless help applicants become familiar with questions concerning their purpose of travel, employment, finances, background, and personal circumstances so they can respond accurately, clearly, and confidently.

About the Author

Fadi Minawi is a U.S. immigration attorney and co-founder of ImmiPrep.ai, where he works with a team of immigration and technology professionals, including former government immigration officers, to build trilingual mock visa interview tools for B-1/B-2 applicants. Fadi tracks nonimmigrant visa policy developments and turns State Department updates into practical guidance for applicants preparing for consular interviews.

Editorial Policy

This article is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice.
